TL;DR
- Excavate 8β12 inches for foot-traffic patios
- Compacted base + bedding sand
- Pavers laid tight, edge restraints, polymeric sand
- Each step matters β skipping any is why other patios settle
A correctly installed paver patio in Maryland will outlast its homeowner. A poorly installed one settles within 3β5 years. The difference is the steps you don't see. Here's how A.R. Curb Appeal LLC installs every paver patio in Baltimore County and Harford County.
Step 1: Layout & Excavation
We mark the patio shape, then excavate 8β12 inches for patios and 12+ inches for driveways. This is where most shortcut contractors save money.
Step 2: Compacted Base
We lay and compact crushed stone in 2-inch lifts to a final compacted depth engineered for Maryland's freeze-thaw cycle.
Step 3: Bedding Sand
1 inch of screeded concrete sand creates a level setting bed for the pavers.
Step 4: Paver Installation
Pavers are set tight to the pattern, then cut to clean edges with a wet saw.
Step 5: Edge Restraints
Plastic or aluminum edge restraints spike into the base β this is what stops your patio from spreading over time.
Step 6: Polymeric Sand & Final Compaction
Polymeric sand swept into joints, plate-compacted, then misted to set. This locks pavers together and prevents weeds.
